Assistive Technology

We have a number of assistive devices available for you:

  • Boox: Note Air3c: The Boox Note Air 3C is a tablet that lets you read, write, and draw using a special pen. It displays color, works with or without the internet, and is ideal for learning and note-taking. It runs on the Android operating system, so you can use your favorite apps while enjoying the lightweight, eye-friendly design of an e-ink device.

  • C-Pen Reader 2: The C-Pen Reader 2 reads words out loud, shows their meanings, and lets you save or replay them later—no internet needed. It also includes a voice recorder to support learning and practicing new words. It’s an excellent tool for people with print disabilities or language learning needs.
  • DAISY players: DAISY players are an audio player designed for people with print disabilities. It reads DAISY books, MP3s, and text files from CDs, SD cards, or USB drives, and features large, tactile buttons and voice-guided menus for simple navigation.
  • Desktop video magnifier (Optelec ClearView C Speech): The Optelec ClearView C with Speech is a desktop video magnifier that reads printed text out loud and shows it on a large screen with adjustable contrast and magnification. You can point to words to hear them, save documents or photos, and enjoy an easy, comfortable reading experience with a modern design. For in-library use at the Main Library.
  • Echo II Smartpen: The Livescribe Echo 2 Smartpen records what you hear and write at the same time. You can tap your notes to hear what was said, and it helps turn your handwriting into digital text. When paired with the LivePen app, your handwritten notes appear instantly on your phone or tablet, and you can convert them into digital text for easy searching and sharing.
  • Envoy Connect audiobook players: The Envoy Connect is a small, easy-to-use audiobook player for people with print disabilities. You can listen to books from the CELA library by loading them with a computer or mailing the device to CELA to add books for you. Download CELA audiobooks onto the Envoy Connect with CELA Connect Software or request download assistance with our Tech Help service.
  • Handheld video magnifiers (Optelec Compact+ HD): The Optelec Compact+ HD is a handheld video magnifier with adjustable magnification, high-contrast viewing modes, and a bright screen for easy reading in any light. It’s lightweight, easy to use, and includes features like a retractable handle, LED lighting, and image capture for reading on the go.
  • Playstation Access Controller: The PlayStation Access Controller is a special game controller for the PlayStation 5 that you can set up in a way that works best for you. You can configure the placement of the buttons, use a joystick and even mount the controller wherever is most comfortable for you. You can also use two Access Controllers together to use as a single virtual controller. This setup enables players to customize their gaming experience by assigning different functions to each controller, accommodating various physical needs.
  •  Trackball Mouse (Expert Mouse): Trackball mice are designed for both left and right hand users, and include a large 55mm trackball that allows for precise and ergonomic movements. Trackball mice are available at all locations for two hour loan, in-library use.
