The Guelph Public Library is partnering with the Guelph Seed Library, a project of the Guelph Tool Library, to distribute a wide range of seeds to help you start your spring garden at home.
Starting now, all library branches—including the Bookmobile—will offer free seeds, with a rotating inventory that changes each week as the program continues into the summer.
“Free seeds give people an easy way to reconnect with nature, try growing their own food, and potentially save on grocery costs throughout the season," says Graham Lockhart, Librarian at the Guelph Public Library’s Main Library.
The first seeds available include onions, asparagus, celery, peppers, oregano, and sage, which should be started immediately. Additional seeds, including eggplant, brussels sprouts, tomatoes, cabbage, squash, and others, should be started indoors before the end of March.
For anyone unable to visit a branch in person, the Guelph Seed Library also distributes seeds through its Facebook group, where users can request seeds and ask for help and support on how to grow and maintain them.
About the Guelph Seed Library
Operating as a project of the Guelph Tool Library, the Guelph Seed Library is a seed-sharing hub where gardeners can “borrow” seeds that have been packaged by a crew of community volunteers. Many will donate their own seeds back to the seed library to help replenish the inventory for the next year.
