Retired CEO, Steve Kraft, wins Lifetime Achievement Award from Ontario Public Library Association

Steve Kraft, retired CEO of the Guelph Public Library was honoured with the Ontario Public Library Association (OPLA) Lifetime Achievement Award for his 41 years of dedication and service to the industry and the Guelph community.

Kraft was presented the award at the OLA Super Conference Awards Gala in Toronto on January 29 and recognized for his dedication to modernizing Library collections and services beyond books, adapting Library operations during a global pandemic, and leading the planning and advocacy for Guelph’s new Central Library.

In his four decades at the Library, Kraft served as Children’s Librarian, Information Supervisor, and Director of the Main Library, and Assistant CEO before serving as CEO from 2014 to 2024. During that 10-year period, he was a staunch advocate for the construction of a new main Library and saw the project to the start of construction. His leadership oversaw the Library become one of the first public services in Guelph to reopen with restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic, marking the Library as an essential point of service and connection for residents.

“Throughout his career, Steve has earned the respect and admiration of colleagues, city leaders, and residents alike,” says Dan Atkins, current CEO of the Library. “His dedication, insight, and quiet perseverance have left a lasting mark on the Library and the city of Guelph. We’re grateful for his vision, leadership, and lifelong commitment to public service.”

“This award is richly-deserved recognition of Steve’s decades of dedication to the Guelph Public Library and beyond,” says Danny Williamson, Past Chair of the Library Board. “Whether they know it or not, citizens of our community who benefit from our Library for years to come, do so thanks to Steve’s tireless work.”

The award is presented annually in honour of an individual who has given lifelong service to the profession and has contributed significantly to the growth and innovation of public libraries in Ontario.
