Starting in June, all Guelph Public Library locations (excluding the Bookmobile) will serve as additional drop-off sites for donated laptops and tablets as part of 100 Devices for Digital Equity, a one-month pilot initiative supported by the Library and delivered through the Guelph Tool Library’s Circular Computer Project (CCP). As members of the Guelph Wellington Digital Equity Coalition, the two organizations are working together to improve access to digital technology in the community.
The goal of 100 Devices for Digital Equity is to collect 100 used laptops and tablets over one month for refurbishment and redistribution to equity-deserving community members who lack reliable access to digital technology.
Eligible devices can be dropped off at the front desk of any Guelph Public Library location. Donors of devices will be required to sign a waiver form to release their device to the Guelph Tool Library. All donated devices will be temporarily stored until they are collected for refurbishment. While donors are encouraged to wipe their devices prior to donation, this is not required. Each device will be securely wiped by trained Guelph Tool Library volunteers to ensure personal data is protected and thoroughly cleared. Refurbished devices will be distributed through local community partners, including Chalmers Community Services Centre, Canadian Mental Health Association Waterloo Wellington, Guelph Community Health Centre, Women in Crisis, Wyndham House, and Guelph Wellington Seniors Association.
Only laptops and tablets will be accepted. Corresponding charging cables will also be accepted but are not required for device drop-off. Residents seeking guidance on how to dispose of non-eligible e-waste items are encouraged to consult the City of Guelph’s Waste Wizard.
“Every donated device becomes an opportunity to help someone access education, employment, and connection,” said John Dennis, Director of the Guelph Tool Library. “Together, we can ensure that working laptops and tablets make it to those that need them most.”
“This partnership with the Guelph Tool Library directly supports the Library’s ongoing work to advance digital equity in our community,” said Jen Lisso, Digital Services Librarian at the Guelph Public Library and Chair of the Guelph Wellington Digital Equity Coalition. “By helping to get refurbished devices into the hands of people who need them, we’re expanding access to online information and supporting our community’s resilience during these challenging economic times.
The 100 Devices for Digital Equity pilot will run for one month at the Guelph Public Library’s locations. Outside of this initiative, the Guelph Tool Library will continue to accept donations of laptops and tablets year-round.
