Guelph Public Library cautions patrons receiving phone calls for overdue materials

The Guelph Public Library has heard from patrons receiving phone calls and voicemail messages notifying them of fees for overdue materials.

As a reminder, the Library no longer charges fees for overdue materials. Only lost or damaged items require payment. While the Library does contact patrons about their holds, overdue items, and lost materials, patrons will be contacted through channels they’ve opted into via their Library account including phone, email, or mail.

All patrons should be cautious of unsolicited phone calls or voicemails that request payment or personal information without first verifying the communication is legitimate.

“If patrons are ever concerned about whether a communication they have received is legitimate from the Library, we encourage them to contact us directly by phone at 519-824-6220, email askus@guelphpl.ca or visit any Library location so we can double check their account details,” says Michelle Campbell, Deputy CEO of the Library.

Account details, including fees owing, are also available online at guelphpl.ca by logging into a Library account.

If you or someone you know has been a victim of fraud, you can report it with Guelph Police Service online or by calling the non-emergency line.
